There is so much abundance around us!! Central Texas is chock full of really amazing local wild foods. Join us for this awesome and informative class and learn about a few of the coolest and most useful, nutritious and delicious, wild foods nature has to offer. In this class we’ll be focusing on Mesquite, Acorns, and Yaupon.
Most people see mesquite as a thorny, stubby tree, but it’s so much more than that! Mesquite beans are an incredible food source that can be made into a high protein bean flour, jelly, and can even add an incredible flavor to homemade ice-cream!
Acorns aren’t just for the squirrels either. This ancient food source was utilized heavily by our human ancestors all across the globe. Acorns are tree nuts that can be enjoyed as a nut butter, made into nut flour, or as a quick nutty snack. The only issue with acorns is that they have a bitter taste when eaten raw. We’ll teach you how to process them and leach out the tannins, so you can add them to your pancakes, cookies, and other recipes.
Yaupon Holly is a naturally caffeinated plant that grows abundantly in our region. It makes an incredibly tasty tea and is super easy to harvest and process. Come let us show you how!
This class will teach you proper plant identification and processing and even share with you some cool recipes to get you started enjoying these Amazing Local Wild Foods!
